Buying a used car

As with any major purchase, before you buy a used car, you will need to do some research. Taking the time to research your purchase could save you a considerable amountof money later. You can learn about car models, options, and prices by spending a little time on the internet. There are hundreds of sites available to provide vehicle information and pricing information that will help you in your used car purchase.

Once you’ve narrowed your choices on the type of vehicle you are looking for research information on repair and maintenance costs on the each of the models.

Consider your payment options. You have a number of choices, pay the full price in cash, finance the vehicle with an auto loan or lease the vehicle. If you you purchase the vehicle with an auto loan, the overall cost of the car increases. That’s because you also have to consider the cost of the loan, including the total amount of interest you will pay on the loan, if you are eligable for traditional financing or require a Bad Credit Auto loan. You also need to determine how much you can put down, what is the trade-in value or your existing vehicle, how much you can afford for a monthly payment, the length of the loan, and the annual percentage rate (APR). Annual percentage rates usually are usually based on your overall credit score. People with bad credit or credit problems tradionally pay more for auto loans and require special financing or bad credit auto loans.

If your finances are tight, you may want to consider paying cash for a less expensive car than you first had in mind.

If you decide to finance with an auto loan, make sure you understand the following aspects of the loan before you sign any loan or purchase documents:

  • the total price you’re paying for the car;
  • the total amount you’re financing;
  • the total interest on the loan
  • the Annual Percentage Rate you are being charged on the auto loan
  • the number and amount of payments
